Nobody knows exactly how many cars were painted in each colour, and most of the factory photos are black and white which doesn’t help ! Best guess is at least 50% of cars were red, white was the next most popular colour, slightly ahead of the blue and then green.

Some later cars were painted different colours when they left the factory. At least one 1967 car was originally painted black. Some cars after 1966 (mostly in Europe) were painted a much darker shade of green, almost a British Racing Green, these cars sometimes had the Charcoal interior of the Red cars and sometimes a completely black interior. A number of these cars were sold to the Berlin police force and one remains in it's original condition in a museum in France but at least 3 of these dark green cars were sold outside of Germany

There doesn't appear to be a standard for bumper inserts, generally early cars were white, later cars black, some American only cars apparently had red inserts.

The wheels were originally painted ivory - often called Old English White, it's almost the exact shade of the current German Mercedes Taxi ! Some White cars had red wheels.

The Amphicar engine was originally painted black, it was neither gloss or matt but an in between colour described as semigloss. The only part that was not black was the rocker box (valve) cover and that was painted a metallic gold colour. The exact shade is an Austin/Leyland/Rover colour called Reynard Gold Metallic, it was used on the Mini and some other production cars around 1979 - if your lucky you might find an aerosol of it.

July 2004. Thanks to Steve Fisher for the follow info from his paint supplier in the USA:

All of the codes are valid.  I have listed them below along with the qualities them can be mixed in:

Fijord Green               PPG Code # 43785        DAR, Omni

Beach Sand White      PPG Code # 90113        DAR, Omni

Classic Regatta Red    PPG Code # 2349         DAR, Deltron, Omni

Lagoon Blue               PPG Code # 12077        DAR, Deltron, Omni

DAR is older technology that would more closely match the original paint; Omni and Deltron are new technology.
