Why we drive on the Left

About us

Sir Stirling Moss

It was a great pleasure for me to meet Sir Stirling Moss in November 2010 when I was able to spend 10 minutes talking with him about this picture.

He remembered the moment, which he described as great fun, it was a publicity event on the Thames in the summer of 1965 for the London Amphicar dealer Sidney Marcus.

I offered Sir Stirling the chance to recreate the moment and splash around in my Amphicar in the Avon.

The car is DYP 1C which is believed to still exist, it was last heard of in Peterborough about 10 years ago when it was complete but in a rough condition.

The photo was only discovered recently and there were some others in the same set but I'm not sure who all the people are - well the first one is easy, I know that the guy drinking and driving is Ian Metcalfe who was the main salesman at the Sidney Marcos dealership and I'm sure that is Steve McQueen in the back.  Who is the lady? I know from the tax disc and river licences that the picture was taken between August and December 1964. Steve McQueen was in the UK and Germany filming The Great Escape but that was a bit earlier. He did buy a gorgeous Ferrari 250 Lusso in 1964 so maybe he was over from the States to collect that.

Ian Metcalfe is in these next two pictures which may have been taken at the 1964 Earls Court Motor Show but who's he with ?

And back on the Thames with this couple:

This is the inside of the Sidney Marcus dealership at 33 Sloane Street, London. The Amphicar was kept in the tank at the back where it could be demonstrated with the propellors running.

And finally, a couple of pictures of NBP emerging from sea a few miles from Brighton.

Please get in touch if you can identify any of these people or have any other info about the photos.

And thanks to John Bevins for scanning them for me from the originals.
